Fireworks Disposal Safety

Do not place hot fireworks in your trash can

Used fireworks can stay hot after they look burned out. Help prevent cart, truck, and property fires by cooling and soaking fireworks before placing them in the garbage.

Cool it. Soak it. Bag it. Trash it.

Never place hot, smoking, or recently used fireworks directly into your garbage or recycling can.

Wait until fireworks are completely out, then soak them fully in water before disposal. Fireworks do not belong in recycling.

Step 1

Let fireworks cool

Do not pick up or throw away fireworks while they are hot, smoking, or still active. Keep them away from dry grass, homes, vehicles, and trash cans.

Step 2

Soak in water

Place used fireworks in a bucket of water and let them soak overnight. This helps make sure remaining sparks or heat are fully extinguished.

Step 3

Bag and place in trash

After soaking, place fireworks in a bag and dispose of them in your regular garbage can. Do not place fireworks in the recycling can.

Do this

  • Use a bucket of water for used fireworks.
  • Soak fireworks overnight before disposal.
  • Bag soaked fireworks before placing them in the garbage.
  • Keep your garbage and recycling cans away from fireworks activity.

Do not do this

  • Do not place hot fireworks in your trash can.
  • Do not place fireworks in your recycling can.
  • Do not try to relight a dud or malfunctioning firework.
  • Do not dump fireworks debris into the street or storm drain.
