Benefits of Using Leaves as Mulch

Leaf Bag Program Update (Effective 2026)

Beginning in 2026, Wasatch Front Waste & Recycling District (WFWRD) will no longer supply leaf bags as part of the leaf collection program.

A limited quantity of leftover leaf bags from prior seasons will be available at our office during the 2026 leaf bag season (Program Dates: Mid October – November 30). These will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of 3 rolls per customer while supplies last. Please check with us during the season for current availability before coming to the office to pick up bags.

🌿 Why Use Leaves as Mulch?

When you and the kids are done jumping in the leaf piles, those leafy leftovers can still do a lot of good in your yard.

  • Reduces moisture loss: Leaves slow evaporation β€” ideal for Utah’s dry climate.
  • Enriches soil: Adds nutrients as leaves decompose.
  • Protects roots: Insulates soil from temperature swings.
  • Suppresses weeds: Natural barrier.
  • Eco-friendly: Keeps waste out of landfills.
Using leaves as mulch is one of the easiest ways to recycle yard waste naturally.

🍁 How to Make the Most of Leaf Mulch

  • Shred first: Breaks down faster.
  • Apply 2–4 inches: Protects soil while allowing airflow.
  • Keep away from stems: Prevents rot.

🌱 Creating Your Own Leaf Compost

  • Leaf pile composting: Stack leaves to create leaf mold.
  • Partial mulching: Feed soil steadily.
Winter mulching prepares your garden for a thriving spring.

🌸 Seasonal Mulching Tips

Fall: Apply before winter to protect roots.

Spring: Mix decomposed mulch into soil for fertility.

🌍 Environmental Benefits
